Acne Scarring

At Laserase we use a Lumenis ResurFx laser for the treatment of acne scarring. This is a Non-Ablative Fractional Laser, that can be used alone, or in combination with IPL for treatment of acne scarring.

Non-Ablative Fractional lasers work by causing controlled damage within the skin, stimulating a healing process, which creates new collagen within the skin, improving the appearance of scars and skin texture. As it is non ablative, it does not burn the surface of the skin, just heating the tissues below the surface. This leads to less down time, than ablative treatments, and reduced risk of side effects.

Combining IPL with Non-Ablative fractional laser treatment, which is done in a single session with the Lumenis M22 machine (Photofractional treatment), increases the stimulation of the fibroblast cells, for collagen stimulation, as well as reducing pigmentation, and vascularity (blood vessels) that can be associated with scars.

Best results are with atrophic scars (flatter, more superficial scars), and boxcar scars (more broad, box like depressions). Ice pick scars will not have a good result as these scars are too deep. A number of treatments are normally needed approximately 6 weeks apart for the best results.

- Erythema (redness) which will last roughly from two to five days
- Swelling which will resemble “hives”, which will last approximately two days
- Itching
- Post Inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Burns (rare)
- Avoid direct sunlight on treated area for 4 weeks before, and 4 weeks after treatment
- Numbing cream is not needed, as cooling will be used along with treatment
